The sign depicts John Lowes, Rector at Brandeston who was hung after being tortured for weeks by the Witchfinder General, Matthew Hopkins and finally confessing to witchcraft. The crest refers to the Revett family who resided at Brandeston Hall from the 16th century. Mary Revett was a benefactor to the parish, having given land for apprenticing poor children. The church of All Saints and Margaret Catchpole’s cottage are also depicted. In All Saints church there is a plaque in memory to the wronged Rector and against the names of incumbents of the church is the name John Lowe, hanged for witchcraft. https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6670768
