The Maltings is to be replaced by what will be the biggest purpose-built Aldi store in the UK, one of the most popular development projects the town has seen for a long time. The removal of this "blot on the landscape" is long overdue, though as the links above tell, it is not without its own fascinating history. It was built to replace the previous Maltings, which were destroyed by German bombs in WW2, so there is a certain irony that it is a German company which has finally sealed the fate of the present building.
