This is a curious piece of topography. The photographer location is on the very edge of the cliff looking inland. The depression in the field is the head of a glacial meltwater channel which drains away from the cliff, and flows west, parallel to the coast, for two miles before turning north and entering the sea. This is opposite to the direction of ice flow, which was from west to east, so the sea must have been filled with ice to clifftop level, forcing the meltwater to flow inland.
