Reputedly records show that highwayman Dick Turpin stayed at the inn but it is unlikely he used the Great North Road, preferring the back roads. Around 1925 the south façade and west wings were much altered. From directories, it seems to have been called the George and Dragon in the 19th century. Entries include, 1839 George Cartwright, 1854 Mrs Elizabeth Cartwright, 1876 Charles Mathews, 1898-1903 Edwin Murray, 1910 by now listed as just the George Hotel and National Telephone Call Office Harry Crowson (manager), 1914 Miss Rachel Kime. In July 2021 it was reported that the hotel underwent a ‘dramatic transformation during lockdown’ having been completely renovated by its new owners and designed by Faber Design & Architecture.
