In the centre of the sign is a representation of the church tower with the church occupying one of the four arms. The tree is a cedar and known as Nelson’s tree as Horatio used to climb it as a boy, when visiting his grandfather, Rev Maurice Suckling, the rector of Woodton. The fellow on the horse is Ned Baldry, chief huntsman of the squire Robert Suckling and renowned for his skills. The representation of a wheatsheaf indicates the agricultural nature of the village.
