Hampstead Heath Extension

Hampstead Heath Extension was not added to Hampstead Heath until 1907, at about the time that Hampstead Garden Suburb to the north was being created. The Heath Extension was created out of farmland, largely due to the efforts of Henrietta Barnett who founded Hampstead Garden Suburb. Its farmland origins can still be seen in the form of old field boundaries, hedgerows and trees. There are a group of ponds near the eastern edge, close to Wildwood Road, a little further up the hill from here. Wildwood Road is to the right here. In the distance can be seen the Church of Saint Jude-on-the-Hill in Central Square. St Jude's is the parish church of Hampstead Garden Suburb. Building of the church began in 1909, but the west end was not completed until 1935. The church was consecrated on 7th May 1911 and is Grade I listed.
