The cottage stands at the crossroads on the A696 (Penrith to Alston) road. Minor roads at the junction go left to Winskill and right to Ousby. Built around 1890 as a wayside inn, it was later named the Fox & Hounds. Now no longer a public house, on the corner stands a sign for the Fox Inn in Ousby. In the distance, above the village of Melmerby, the snow covered hills of the north Pennines rise up to Fiend's Fell.
