The house is celebrating its 150th birthday this year having been constructed for Richard Bevan, one of the founders of Barclays Bank, in 1865. His children included the artist Robert Polhill Bevan and leading suffragist Edith Bevan. When Richard died in 1918 the house was put up for auction and was later requisitioned during World War Two after which it became a training school for nursery nurses. When that moved to Lindfield the house was redeveloped into flats specifically for the homeless. The house is currently boarded up and empty and awaiting redevelopment once more.
