A Tudor house built by William Hawes in 1576 and later occupied by the Fielding and Greswolde families. The south front was destroyed by fire in 1867 but was rebuilt; the west front, seen here, is largely original though heavily restored. The inscription above the door reads: H/WV 1576. Hic hospites, in coelo cives ("Here we are guests, but in heaven we shall be citizens").
