The church, which contains masonry dating from the 12th century, stands on the site of an earlier church, presumed to have been of wattle and daub. The north and east walls of local limestone are two and a half feet thick. Windows in the south facing wall of the chancel date from about 1180. Originally this was a plain rectangular building with low tower, that was added to in the 14th century with a south aisle. In the 15th century a south facing porch was added and another stage to the tower. Later the porch was moved to the north side of the church. More recently the interior walls were stripped of plaster and raised pointing with black cement was added. The photograph was taken with the camera resting on the top of the old font, which stood in the nave. A more modern one now stands in the tower. At this time the church had pews, which have since been removed. The hymn board has since been transferred to the north side of the nave. The Great Northern railway line passed within yards of the church. Parallel to this ran the Midland railway and both were crossed from above by the Great Central railway main line. Luckily my grandfather kept a note of our visit on this day otherwise I would never have remembered the date. He recorded that we were there from 4:30-9:30pm, that the temperature was 62 degrees Fahrenheit and there were light thunder showers.
