Gorse in bloom beside the Ridgeway http://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/ridgeway in January recalls the old saying "When the gorse is out of bloom, kissing is out of fashion". Gorse on top of the chalk downs probably indicates acidity due to the presence of residual clay-with-flints, which capped most of the chalk downs hereabouts since the Ice Ages, but has steadily eroded away.http://www.bgs.ac.uk/lexicon/lexicon.cfm?pub=CWF
