Orbiston Community was a short-lived venture founded (like the more successful New Lanark) upon the socialist principles of the 19th Century social reformer Robert Owen. The Community was founded by Abram Combe and Archibald James Hamilton and consisted of a single stone building large enough to accommodate 1000 people. It was active from April 1826 until December 1827. The members were given notice to quit in the autumn of 1827 by William Combe, who had assumed management of the fractious Community following the death of his brother Abram.
