"Enemis of God and the King to the Earth did me ding* doun.1572" — a reminder of troubled times, namely the civil war between the 'Queen's men' and 'King's men' during the Lang Siege of Edinburgh Castle, 1571-3. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marian_civil_war The building has since been demolished and the lintel removed. The close is named after a Senior Bailie who lived here in 1686. *strike
