A £17m project to renovate the much-loved Co-op building in Newcastle is underway and is expected to be completed by December 2015. Construction on the Grade-II listed structure Image began in April 2014 by construction firm, DTZ Investment Management, in partnership with Interserve, and is expected to be completed by December 2015. When finished it will contain a 184-bedroom Premier Inn hotel, other retail outlets and a large gym. The property includes the Art Deco Newgate Street part built in 1930, and the older 1902 portion on St Andrew’s Street. Asbestos and earlier phases of building and decoration removed with a view to expose and conserve the remaining period features.
