The Tyne Brewery was founded in 1868-70 by the Tyne Brewing Company and acquired by John Barras and Company of Gateshead (founded 1770) in 1884. In 1890 Newcastle Breweries was established with the blue five pointed star as its logo. In 1896 the brewery acquired Haymarket Brewery. This was closed, demolished and replaced with the construction of new offices for Newcastle Breweries in 1896-1900. In 1953-54 a new bottling factory was built on a site bordered by Hill Street, Wellington Street and Heber Street. The brewery was further expanded in 1955 and in 1960 merged with Scottish Brewers Limited forming Scottish and Newcastle Breweries Limited. The site closed in May 2005 with all brewing transferred to the Federation Brewery at Dunston, Gateshead. The Tyne Brewery was renowned for Newcastle Brown Ale, which was created by Lt Colonel James Herbert Porter and brewed from 1927 until its closure in 2005. Following the closure of the brewery, demolition of the site started in March 2007. The only surviving element of the brewery complex are the brewery offices constructed in 1964-65 and now renovated as the Sandman Signature Hotel.
