The railway junctions at Selhurst were built on the former Croydon Common, and the dominant vegetation of birch woodland presumably reflects this: the area was possibly an extension of the heathland seen further east. The linear depression leading away from the camera to the bridge under the railway service road is probably one of the headwaters of the Norbury Brook, which rises on the former Common.
