St Mary, Covenham St Mary

Covenham St Mary and Covenham St Bartholomew run together, effectively forming one village. Each has a medieval Church building but St Mary and St Bartholomew's are only 100 yards apart along the main road. In the middle part of the 20th Century the practice grew up of using St Bartholomew’s in the Winter and St Mary’s in the Summer. Eventually common sense (and financial necessity) prevailed and St. Bartholomew’s was closed on 17-Dec-1980 and put in the care of a Preservation Trust, whilst St Mary’s now serves the whole of Covenham. Although it doesn't appear so, the church and the land it stands on, are well inside the grid square.
