The sign has a plaque which states that it was “Erected through public subscription by parishioners and in memory of George E. Clarke and Robert B Rolfe, 1985” Neither were blacksmiths but both were so highly respected that Clarke Close was named in George Clarke’s honour. The sign depicts blacksmith Howell, working at his anvil and the forge itself was just north of the church of St Peter’s church and overlooking the village green.
