A short distance east of Trowell, the M1 crosses the derelict Nottingham Canal and the A609 Nottingham Road. It only bridges the latter (right background); as the canal had been closed for 30 years when the M1 was built, the motorway was effectively built over the canal. The sections of the canal either side of the M1 are both in water: the concrete construction in the right foreground surrounds the east end of a pipe that links the two sections.
