Just outside the south porch is this memorial to 10 members of 564 Bomber Squadron USAF whose aircraft crashed in Costessey on 7th March 1945. They were one of the "Sky Scorpions" squadrons who were based at RAF Hethel. They were members of the crew of pilot Lt. Dale E. Williams on the aircraft "Shazam". Their target for the day was the Soest Marshaling Yards. They crashed shortly after take off in cloudy weather with heavy icing. Among the crew were: 1st Lt. George E. Benko, O-714616, Co-Pilot, born on 19 November 1921, he entered the service from Ohio and 2nd Lt. Richard K. Angert, O-2074562, Navigator, born on 2 December 1919, he entered the service on 14 October 1944 from Chillicothe, Ohio.
