Once owned by the Woolmington Brewery and claimed to be the oldest pub in Sherborne stretching back to 1406, The George is Grade II Listed and the present building is thought to be of early 16th century construction and to have formed part of its Hospice neighbour. Directory entries include, 1851 John Day, 1855 I’m unable to locate it or any inn in Cheap Street I can’t account for, 1859 John Parker, 1875 Henry Williams, 1889-1895 Thomas Miles and 1911-1915 Frederick William Salmon. Gable end facing the street is the Grade II* Listed Former Hospice of Saint Julian, named after the mystic, Saint Juliana of Norwich and given by Margaret Gough in 1437 towards the endowment of the present almshouse of Saints John the Baptist and John the Evangelist. The building is a much altered 16th century property.
