Despite the rain there is a great atmosphere in the city, the carnival in nearby George Square is in full swing and last minute Christmas shoppers go about their business. Less than 24 hours later this became the scene of a terrible road accident which resulted in the deaths of six pedestrians, including three members of the same family. A Glasgow City Council bin lorry struck several pedestrians at this spot on Royal Exchange Square at Queen Street before coming to rest in the wall of the Millennium Hotel, 200 metres away on the other side of George Square. RIP Jack and Lorraine Sweeney, Erin McQuade, Gillian Ewing, Stephenie Tait, and Jacqueline Morton.
