St Hilda's was originally founded in 1893 as a women's college with close links to Cheltenham Ladies' College. Despite this it was not until 1920 that women were able to become members of the University and eligible for Oxford degrees. In 1961 St Hilda's became a full college of the University. It now has roughly equal numbers of women and men students.
