The inscription is almost illegible from the road but seems to read: 'The Yealands (?) district School. in Union with the National Society. Founded AD 1841. J Jackson. G Hodgson. Builders' 'Yealands' has weathered or been deliberately obscured (perhaps to confuse potential German invaders during the Second World War?). The school building looks relatively recent so perhaps this was retrieved from a former site.
