This is the site of the original gates of Devizes Castle - once described as 'the finest and most splendid fortress in the whole of Europe.' Nowadays it is on private hands and not open to the public, as well as being somewhat less splendid than of old. This particular gate was the site of several public hangings during the civil war of the twelfth century.
