St Lawrence, Bardney

The church of St Lawrence was built in 1434 of stone & brick in the Perpendicular style. The chancel was restored in 1873 and the rest of the church 1878-1880. Wall paintings of Lincolnshire Saints adorn the chancel walls. Epitaphs inside as read: Joseph Knowles an apprentice of London & son of Richard Knowles Senior of Bardney deceased. This Joseph at the age of 25 years departed this life the 10 day of August in the year of 1603. Who by his last Will & Testament, dated the second day of August in the same year amongst divers other good & charitable gifts did give 30 pound to some of his trusty friends of Bardney to be bestowed on land for the use & benefit of the poor that are & hereafter shall be of this Town & parish of Bardney for ever. The Rents & profits of such lands yearly to be bestowed in bread & to be given weekly every Sunday immediately after morning prayer to 12 poor people of the Town & parish of Bardney every one to the value of one penny. John Knowles Senior & bachelor of this parish of Bardney in the year of 1603. Did also give ten pounds towards the furthering of the gift of his nephew Io Knowles before named to make an amount to the sum of 12 pence the week aforesaid to the same & only use & uses of the poor inhabitants of this Town & parish of Bardney they are and shall be for ever. St Luke X 37 Go & do thou likewise. William Hurstcroft, late of Bardney who departed this life the second day of May in the year of our Lord 1639, who in his last will & testament besides other charitable deeds did also give one house in Bolton to the poor of Bardney, & Newport in Lincoln equally to be divided for ever.
