The bridge carried a narrow gauge waggonway across the road here at Castle Hill. Coal and stone were brought down the valley of the Haltwhistle Burn to sidings on the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway. The bridge can be seen in an old photo on the Haltwhistle Burn website http://haltwhistleburn.org/page546.html .
