The Darwen Spitfire

The Darwen Spitfire Memorial commemorates the spitfire V R2718 "Borough of Darwen" fighter 'plane bought by the people of Darwen during the Second World War. A sum of £5707 was raised by public appeal in less than four months to fund the construction of the 'plane. The V R2718 entered service on 26th March 1941 and saw considerable action before going missing on 14th July 1941 during a bomber-escort operation over northern France. The memorial was unveiled in November 2012.
