A pair of 108m lengths of rail being winched off the train by the track placing machine. The rails are secured to the sleepers allowing the train to advance and repeat the process. Subsequent steps are welding, ballasting and tamping the lines until the railway is laid ready for regular use. The Borders Railway is due to begin operation in September 2015. See http://www.bordersrailway.co.uk/project/track-laying.aspx for further details.
