"The Old Royal" (1859-1984/86) seen from the multi-storey car park in Saltergate. The new Chesterfield & North Derbyshire Royal Hospital in Calow was opened in April 1984. In 1986 work began on a maternity and gynaecology unit on the same (new) site, the opening of which led to the closure the old facilities in the town centre. In 1984 this building was purchased by an orthopaedic surgeon who converted the lower portion of the hospital - adjoining Infirmary Road and Durrant Road - into the Alexandra Private Hospital. The building is now used as offices. In addition, the older part of the Chesterfield College building on Infirmary Road is also visible.
