Founded by Robert, Earl of Leicester (1104-68). It was originally the chapel for the hospital of St James and St John. In 1484 the hospital was closed down due to maladministration and ownership passed to William Waynflete the Bishop of Winchester. He founded Magdalen College Oxford and the school. Representatives of the college still sit on the school's governing body.
