Grade II Listed gatehouse of about 1854. The castle is on the site of a fort or blockhouse built by Henry VIII 1545-47 that was converted to a house in 1726 and remodelled in the mid 19th century only to be gutted by fire and rebuilt in 1897 by architect Philip Brown of Southampton, according to Pevsner.
