The inscription painted on a panel of wood above the door to the cottage Image in which John Dalton, scientist, was born in 1766. The cottage (and the adjoining farm house) is grade II listed. The inscription reads: JOHN DALTON DCL LLD THE DISCOVERER OF THE ATOMIC THEORY WAS BORN HERE SEPT 5 1766 DIED AT MANCHESTER JULY 27 1844
