View southward, towards London St Pancras, with a long train of milk empties - a seven-day working from Cricklewood - probably going as far as Appleby, approaches Elstree & Borehamwood station. The locomotive is Stanier Class 5 4-6-0 No. 44828 (built 1944, withdrawn 9/67). The strange building above the Up side is the Appliance Building erected by the Fire Offices' Committee for carrying out fire tests and assessments on various building components and fire-extinguishing equipment: the site was expanded considerably over the following two decades but is now no more than modern housing.
