The origin of the name "Hole-in-the-Wall" is obscure and probably disputed. What is clear is that you won't find any cash machines here! But walkers on the Wye Valley Walk (which follows the minor road for about 2km hereabouts) will find two fine benches on which to sit and eat their sandwiches. Five footpaths radiate from this spot. The Wye Valley Walk goes north-east and south-west. A path to Perrystone goes ENE, and the Herefordshire Trail goes both ESE towards Crow Hill and south towards Brampton Abbotts. But not surprisingly, no paths go north-west, which would involve swimming across the Wye!
