Three quarters of a mile (1km) from Ingleton is Thornton In Lonsdale. This small group of houses, church and pub are just inside the National Park boundary. Sherlock Holmes author, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was married in St. Oswald's Church which has a set of stocks outside, once used for punishing petty offenders.
