Benchmark on St James's Church

This Ordnance Survey benchmark on St James's Church was established in 1844 during the First primary levelling of England & Wales, and was levelled with a height of 524.7920 feet (159.9566 metres) above mean sea level (Liverpool datum). It was included as a side level on the Manchester to Gloucester levelling line. The surveyor's description was "No. 308(a). Handsworth New Church. Bolt in West face of tower ; 0.87 ft. above surface" (Public Abstract p.30). It can be found on the north-west face of the tower, just to the north of the south-west buttress, just south of a side door. The centre bolt and part of the datum line have been cemented over. It appears on the 1890 OS map.
