A view of the former coaching inn - The Hop Pole Hotel - on Church Street overlooking the junction of the former road with Main Street. Apparently there were hop fields on the alluvial deposits on the sides of the river Maun between 1790-1892, hence the name taken by the pub. In addition, "The Hop Pole" was in the past a key place for the change-over of horses pulling the London-Glasgow mail coach. The hotel was built c.1740 by the Savile family who had been owners of nearby Rufford Abbey since the mid-1600s.
