Gun Shed at Levington

This shed was used during WW2 to house a railway-mounted 12 inch Mk V Howitzer gun weighing 76 tons mounted on a mounting railway truck Mk3. Apart from the new external cladding it is just as it was during the war. Inside there is a deep pit for servicing the wagon. The gun was loaded and made ready in the shed before leaving. The top half of the shed could be rolled back and the gun fired if necessary. Normally the gun would travel along the railway to where ever it was needed. It was operated by the 9th Super Heavy Regiment Field Artillery. The gun had a range of 14,350 yards. It was never fired in anger and left Levington in 1942 and was transferred to Orwell.
