Folkestone, Kent, The Leas, The Step-Short Centenary Memorial Arch. The Memorial Arch commemorates the Centenary of the outbreak of the First World War and was dedicated on August 4th, 2014. 12 plaques commemorate the men and women passing through Folkestone during the first World War. This plaque reads: "The declaration of war heralded great social change in the role of women. Nowhere was this more evident than in Folkestone. Local women volunteer to help the war effort, especially in the town's many hospitals, while the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps HQ prepares 7000 WAACs for overseas service."
