Built on the site of the former Walsgrave Hospital, on the outskirts of Coventry, this is a hospital on a gargantuan scale - one of the largest in Europe. The statistics are mind-boggling: 1,250 beds, 27 operating theatres, over 8,000 hand basins. Whether patients are better served by this sort of regional health factory or by smaller more personal local institutions is a moot point.
