The town of Cirencester has a long history of brewing. By 1820 the firm of Croome, Cripps and Co. had established itself and was busy branching out. By the nineteenth century the Cirencester Brewery had a large and important presence here, taking over other local rivals. By 1865 it had become the Cirencester Brewery and went on to become the largest employer in the town (if not the county) right into the early 1900s. The company merged with a Reading firm in 1937, but was finally liquidated in 1949.
