The building was originally home to the offices of the pottery industry's insurance schem. The scheme, which represented some 400 companies was wound up in 1951. In the same year same year the creation of the British Pottery Manufacturers' Federation Club, or Potters' Club, was founded by Colonel Harry Johnson with its premises on the third floor of the building.
