City Bridge carries the B3330 over the River Itchen. High Street is on the left (west) side of the river, Bridge Street on the right. Built in 1813, the single arch stone bridge, also known as St Swithun Bridge or Soke Bridge, is Grade I Listed. The bridge occupies a strategic position at Winchester's ancient river crossing place and eastern entrance, on the site of at least one earlier structure. Remains of a medieval bridge, including three arches, survive beneath the road surface nearby.
