The approach to Bateman's House with the kitchen garden in the foreground. The house was built in 1634 in the Jacobean style for a local ironmaster, John Brittan. The house was purchased in 1902 by the writer Rudyard Kipling in 1902. Following his death in 1936 his personal effects were placed into storage. The house was bequeathed to the National Trust in 1939 and has been restored using the original artefacts. Refer to picture Image for the entry gate.
