The Three Fishes is in a half-timbered building which probably dates from the 16th century. Originally named the Fishes, then the Old Three Fishes, it has been the Three Fishes since 1838. The most likely origin of the name is that it reflected the fishmongers' trade that was carried out in the street. The fish market was held in Fish Street on certain days of the week until 1869.
