Lyme Regis: the old wooden postbox in Coombe Street

Detail of the frontage of Image, which was the town's post office from 1799 to 1853. The original wooden posting box, which we see here, therefore dates from some time during that period and makes it one of the oldest surviving posting facilities in Britain. It is clear that an original horizontal upper slot was converted to a vertical slot, although the lower one remains horizontal.
