Remembering Kitchener's volunteers

On this spot on Twyning village green on 21 September 1914 (exactly 100 years ago to the day) men of the parish of Twyning gathered as Kitchener's volunteers. Leaving Twyning, they assembled at Tewkesbury, along with men from neighbouring villages where they took part in a parade before departing by train to Bristol and a training camp. The building in the background is a modern replacement school building, replacing the original National School which would have been there in 1914. The men are gone but not forgotten!
