The London, Brighton & South Coast Railway opened the railway between Hurst Green and Eridge on 2nd January 1888. Cowden station was opened on 1st October 1888. This is now on the Uckfield to Oxted line and is one of the few non-electrified railways in South East England. Much of the line south of Hever station was singled in 1990 and at the same time Cowden's up platform, seen here on the right, was taken out of use and all trains now use the former down platform. The singling of the line was one of the major causes of the Cowden Rail Crash on 15th October 1994 when five people were killed in a head-on collision between two trains, 350 yards beyond the station in this direction - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cowden_rail_crash
