The church originally stood further north but was in danger of falling into the sea through coastal erosion, so in 1881 it was dismantled, except for the tower, and rebuilt here, with a new tower. The tower and graveyard that was left behind became the subject of a poem called "The Garden of Sleep" and later a series of works called Poppy-Land by Clement Scott in the 1880s, which attracted tourists to the area.
